The Parsurameswar Temple is one of the oldest Hindu Temples located in Bhubaneswar. The Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and was built in 650 AD. The Temple is a typical pre-10th century Orissan Temple with elements such as the pine spire that curves over the sanctum that houses the deity and the pyramid hall where devotees can pray.
The Temple is richly ornamented with bas-relief of processions of royal animals like horses and elephant. The windows are covered with latticework and the courtyard has exotic carvings of Lord Ganesha and other deities. On the north-west corner is a unique Lingam with 1000 engraved lingas. Other interesting carvings are of Shiva throwing Ravana who tried to evacuate Mount Kailasha. Various other carvings depict stories from the Puranas and the inner doorways are decorated with figures of planets.
The Temple is located close to the Lingaraj Temple and is 2 kms south of the city centre on the main Bhubaneswar-Puri road. The best way to reach the Temple is by auto rickshaw.
