Parasurameswar Temple

Parasurameswar Temple is one of the finest temples of Orissa located in Bhubaneswar which stands distinctively for its architectural marvel. Unlike other temples it is a unique structure which can be dated back to the post Buddhist period in the 7th century BC. This temple mainly depicts the marriage of Lord Shiva and Parvati through fine sculptures of the temple. Decorated with the images of animals as well as sundaries along with the images of Lord Shiva this is one of the ancient temples of which is known for its art and architecture.

Parasurameswar Temple is a leading example of ancient temples in Orissa. Unlike other temples it has a rectangular terrace surrounded with a couple of walls. It includes a duel which is 13 meters high with no platform. It has a Triratha on plane that was dominant feature of ancient temples. Along with this it also includes a Jagamohana or a porch, adjoining the square towered shrine. This structure had an additional doorway opening to the south with four latticed windows; one each on the north and south while two on west; each decorated with wonderful structure of dancers and musicians. The main entrance of Jagamohana is decorated with fine sculptures of domestic elephants capturing the wild ones. Then outer wall is decorated with Saiva mythology particularly depicting the marriage of Shiva and Parvati. Along with some well maintained sculptures the temple is heavily decorated including the images of Lord Agni, Lord Brahma, Shiva as well as Parvati along with some domestic animals.

Parasurameswar Temple mainly typifies the stage of Saiva Pashupati Sect which is illustrated through representation of Lakulisa. The sculpture is very similar to the statue of Buddha with four disciples dedicated at his feet. Lakulisa depicts Lord Shiva as Pashupati Nath. As the temple was constructed just after the Buddhist period, it included features resembling with the Buddhist architecture and religion. Alongwith this, the temple also includes a veranda topped by recessed frieze and numerous sculptures.

Thus with the notable sculptures of seven mother goddesses this temple is one of the most impressive temples of the ancient Orissa.
