The existing Mahabhairab Temple in Assam was built by the contribution of Sri Swayambar Bharati, more popularly known as Naga Baba and developed later by Sri Mahadeo Bharati and other devotees in whatever way they can contribute. It has acquired the status of pilgrimage over the years and thousands of devotees visit the temple every year. The Mahabhairab temple is believed to be the earliest Shaiva shrine. Festivals associated with Lord Shiv including Shiv Ratri are celebrated amidst huge pomp and mass gathering.
Idols of Lord Gaanesh and Lord Hanuman stands as 'Dwarpaals' to the entrance of the ancient Mahabhairab temple. The gateway also bears elaborate adornment that has been intrinsically carved out. The temple complex is in the process of being surrounded by a wall. Further decorations including guest rooms, shopping arcades and landscaping are in plans to help the place develop as a pilgrimage with convenience.
