The Anakapalle town is famous for its jaggery market. Its market is ranked second in India in terms of jaggery imports/exports. Anakapalle is also a very busy and famous business center in this region. Many people from the rural areas around the town cites Anakapalle as their destination for their shopping and medical needs.
The town was originally under the rule of the Kalinga Empire, and later came under the rule of the Gajapati, Kakatiya, and Qutub Shahi empires. Around 1450, Appala Raju took over the rule of region under the Nawab of Arcot, with Anakapalle as his fortified headquarters. The saga of Anakapalle starts with a historian named "Tallapragada" place and found that Anakapalle. This was proved from the historical evidences found on Bojjana Konda. Satavahanas, Vishnukundans, Gajapathi's, Vijayanagara Samrats, Golkonda Samanta Rajulu ruled this place.
Its alias names are Aniankapalli, Anekaphalle, Vijaypuri,Veniapalii,Kanakapuri, Bellampatnam, and Anakapalli. It is located by the side of a holy river named Sarada. These historic monuments are of great interest to tourists. During the Independence struggle of India, many prominent leaders like Mahatma GandhiDr.BR Ambedkar visited Anakapalle. It is around 34 km in distance from Vishakapatnam.
Anakapalli nookallamma is a mighty deity in north Andhra pradesh. This temple is having a 550 years of history. Sri Nookallamma is having alias names as nookambica and kakatamba. In 1450's anakapalli was ruled by a kalinga king named kakarlapudi appalaraju. He built a fort in anakapalli and built a temple for kakatamba on south side of his fort. Later on anakapalli was ruled by king jagannadha raju payakarao, when britishers ruled India. He was hanged to death when he lost the battle with britishers in the war at payakaraopet. Britisher's appointed vijayanagaram raju as king in this place. They changed the name of the deity to nookambica. Next to this king gode gajanadha raju was appointed as king by vijayanaram raju. This king didn't pay tax to the britishers for a long time so the fort was auctioned by britishers. And in this auction pydicherla anadaraju bought the fort. And till today they are acting as the trusties for the temple. In 1953 the temple was under taken by the government and now it is under ministry of . The deity's statue was rebuilt by Every year a jatara takes place for one month from the day before ugadi. This temple is having 8 cottages, a queue complex, kalyanamandapam, and for every one's convenience a web site with name www.nookalamma.org has been developed by the government.
